Dr. Carl Merrow’s farewell event drew an impressive turnout, a clear reflection of the respect and admiration colleagues have for him. Not every farewell garners such a crowd, which speaks volumes about the impact he has made.
Dr. Merrow has been a faculty member at Cincinnati Children’s for a total of 15 years, returning for a second chapter after training here and then spending time in Alabama. His decision to come back shaped the careers of countless pediatric and general radiologists who remain grateful for his presence. Through his work with ACR, StatDX, the American Board of Radiology, and numerous educational initiatives, he has influenced thousands of physicians across the country.
Widely regarded as a consummate teacher, Dr. Merrow has been recognized both formally and informally for his commitment to education. At Cincinnati Children’s, he has gone above and beyond by hosting fellow conferences, mentoring trainees, and dedicating his time to the growth of the next generation. His contributions have changed the face of pediatric radiology education—not only for fellows and pediatric radiologists, but also for general radiologists nationwide, who frequently interpret pediatric imaging.
Beyond his professional achievements, colleagues know him as a steady, positive presence in the department—a force for good whose calm and thoughtful demeanor has been a constant source of support. Of course, he was known to be a bit cranky at 5:30 in the morning or when asked to read twin fetal MRIs—especially on days when two sets of twins came through. But that lighthearted side only endeared him further to those who worked with him.

Now, with his children grown and new opportunities ahead, Dr. Merrow is ready for a new adventure. He and his wife, Nan, will be moving to Salt Lake City, where he already has strong connections with former Cincinnati colleagues. It is a natural next step and a fortunate gain for his new institution.
While his presence will be deeply missed, there is excitement and happiness for the journey ahead. His legacy at Cincinnati Children’s is one of excellence in education, compassion in care, and kindness in character. Though he will continue making life better for children in a different city, the impact he leaves behind here will be long remembered.
Thank you, Carl, for all you have given.
