After more than 25 years of dedicated service, the Radiology Department at Cincinnati Children’s bids a heartfelt farewell to one of its most respected and beloved leaders—Dr. Sally O’Hara. Her retirement marks the close of an extraordinary chapter defined by clinical excellence, mentorship, and an enduring impact on pediatric radiology.

As a clinician, educator, and former ultrasound director and fellow, Dr. O’Hara played a pivotal role in advancing pediatric imaging while shaping the culture of the department. Her commitment to patients and families, combined with her passion for teaching, helped set a standard of care and professionalism that continues to inspire.
Over the years, she mentored countless fellows, residents, and colleagues, instilling not only technical expertise, but also a deep sense of compassion and curiosity. Her influence extends far beyond the institution, as many of those she trained have gone on to make their own significant contributions in radiology across the country.

Dr. O’Hara’s work earned her recognition on a national stage. As Radiologist-in-Chief Dr. Trout reflected, her contributions have been “immeasurable,” not only within Cincinnati Children’s but also across leading organizations such as the American College of Radiology (ACR), the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM), the Society for Pediatric Radiology (SPR), and the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).
“Sally is a nationally recognized figure in pediatric ultrasound,” Dr. Trout shared. “She’s contributed immeasurably to our department and much more broadly than that.”
Her leadership helped guide the growth of the ultrasound program while elevating the department’s reputation. Yet, beyond her accolades, it is her positivity, authenticity, and ability to support others that leaves the deepest impression.
Those who worked alongside Dr. O’Hara often speak of her steady presence and uplifting attitude. Dr. Trout described her as a “culture carrier”—someone who consistently showed up, supported others, and helped colleagues be their best.
“She always came to work with a positive attitude…not absurdly positive, but grounded, with just the right edge of humor when it was needed,” he noted.
Dr. Blaise Jones, a longtime colleague and former classmate, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing her leadership qualities from an early stage: “She had a very calm nature. The doctors I’ve always respected are the ones who stay cool under pressure, and that’s one of the first attributes I think of when I think of Sally.”
From her time as a chief resident to her rapid ascent into leadership in ultrasound, Dr. O’Hara consistently demonstrated a rare combination of composure, warmth, and determination.
Reflecting on her career, Dr. O’Hara highlighted just how much the field of radiology has evolved during her time at Cincinnati Children’s. From the days of film imaging and mechanical processors to the transition into digital systems in the early 2000s, she experienced and helped navigate some of the most significant technological shifts in the field.
“I remember when we were completely on film…those big machines that jammed and needed fixing,” she recalled. “Then in 2000, thanks to Dr. Neil Johnson, we transitioned to digital. It was challenging, but we got through it, and now updates happen monthly.”
Her ability to adapt, lead through change, and guide others during periods of transformation has been a defining feature of her career.

Dr. O’Hara’s legacy is not just found in programs built or milestones achieved; it lives on in the people she mentored, the patients she cared for, and the culture she helped shape. Generations of trainees, both within Cincinnati Children’s and across the nation, continue to look up to her as a role model and mentor.
Her colleagues describe her as someone who made people better—more confident, more capable, and more compassionate.
While her retirement marks the end of an era, it also opens the door to a new chapter filled with well-deserved rest, adventure, and joy. As Dr. Trout warmly expressed, the department hopes this is not goodbye, but simply a transition: “Please don’t be a stranger. We want you back—checking in, chatting, and staying connected.”
Congratulations to Dr. Sally O’Hara on an extraordinary career and a well-earned retirement. Thank you for your years of service, leadership, and unwavering dedication. Your impact will be felt for generations to come.
Wishing you many wonderful adventures and continued fulfillment in the years ahead.
