As a young African-American woman, Jean Turner began her career at the Cincinnati Children’s Department of Radiology in the 1960s, working under the direction of former Radiology Chair Frederick N. Silverman, M.D. Her 40-year career began as a radiology file clerk, and she retired as a member of the Radiology Reading Room staff.
Jean developed a love of Radiology but noticed a lack of minorities in the growing and advancing field of Radiological technology. After discussing this disparity with Radiology managers and leaders at Cincinnati Children’s, the Jean Turner Scholarship Award was developed to create opportunities for minorities in the field of Radiology and to honor her 40 years of service in the Radiology department. Supporting minorities who are interested in entering the field of Radiology is one way the department of Radiology furthers its mission in achieving excellence in imaging.
We are proud to announce that Eliane Mukayisenga and Marianne Servin have been awarded the Jean Turner Scholarship Award. Congratulations to them, and we wish them the very best in the future.

The Jean Turner Minority Scholar, 2022
When I was eight, I received an improper diagnosis that resulted in losing three teeth even though only two were the problem. As I grew up, I realized I was not the only one. Since then, I have decided that when I get an opportunity, I will pursue Radiology technology to contribute to society and prevent this from happening to others (children in particular).
Later, I realized that a career in Radiology technology aligns with my personality, values, and character. I have a deep passion for helping people and am supportive and dependable, which are essential for successful radiology techs.
I am excited and grateful that I received the Jean Turner Minority Scholarship for Medical Imaging, which relieves me from the college financial burden, brings me one step closer to my childhood dream of servicing children, and introduces me to a network of experienced technologists. Lastly, I am committed to becoming a successful Radiology technologist who exemplifies and embodies Jean Turner’s love and passion for Radiology.

I am very grateful to my family and friends who also make it possible to be where I am today with a special thanks for my wonderful mother, Monica Servin. I thank the committee for this wonderful opportunity and making graduation not only a dream but an absolute.
