Let me begin by saying that it has been an absolute pleasure to be a member of the Cincinnati Children’s Radiology team over the past year. I have increasingly come to realize how special this institution is, how critical it is to the care of children from Ohio and beyond, and what a valuable partner it is to the community. I especially want to thank my fellow radiologists, pediatricians, and surgeons for welcoming me and integrating me into their respective care teams.
While I spend the majority of my time conducting research and reading scans, another crucial part of my day-to-day work is teaching. This includes tutoring a host of individuals, including medical students, radiology and pediatric residents, fellows, technologists, and even fellow attending radiologists.
Educating in radiology comes in many forms. Most often, teaching occurs while scanning patients or in the reading room during trainee scan interpretation. However, teaching also occurs in numerous other settings, including interesting and challenging case conferences, training seminars, and multidisciplinary symposiums that emphasize optimizing patient care.
The radiologist may also impart knowledge in a variety of forms. We serve as speakers at national and international meetings, such as the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). We author educational articles that are published in journals such as “RadioGraphics,” and compose educational materials online that can often be accessed by learners from around the world.

As a clinician, researcher, and teacher, it is an honor to have been named a recipient of the 2016 RSNA Honored Educator Award. This award recognizes key individuals who have produced an array of educational resources in the past calendar year and have furthered the profession of radiology by providing high-quality educational content in a specific field of study. There is no question there are many radiologists at Cincinnati Children’s and elsewhere that are deserving of this award. That said, it is a truly an honor to receive it, and I hope to continue educating for years to come!

Janet is a sonographer at Cincinnati Children’s. She has worked in the Ultrasound department for over 26 years, and clearly has a passion for working with children. Janet serves as a lead Safety Coach, TJC representative, and education resource for her department. She enjoys challenging exams, and is involved in local and global ultrasound research projects. When she is not at work, her 4 children and 9 grandchildren keep her very busy!
