Dr. Janet L. Strife passed away Wednesday, May 8 in Boulder, Colorado, from complications of Parkinson’s disease. Dr. Strife spent her entire professional career (along with her nephrologist husband, Dr. Fred Strife) from 1978 to 2012 at Cincinnati Children’s, including serving as Radiologist-in-Chief from 1992 to 2002. Both Drs. Strife jointly received the Founders Award from the Cincinnati Pediatric Society in 2007. Along the way, Dr. Janet Strife had a remarkable influence on radiology and pediatric imaging, serving in numerous leadership roles with national societies including the presidency of the Society for Pediatric Radiology, and received its Gold Medal in 2010.
Even more important than her leadership accomplishments is the manner in which Dr. Strife led her organizations and people. She was passionate about training the next generation of pediatric radiologists, but she was just as dedicated to the mentoring of young professionals throughout the hospital, especially women. She understood that careers are not a “one size fits all” proposition and took a personal interest in people’s development and realized that needs and directions change over time. Her combination of thoughtfulness, kindness, generosity, and toughness were unique, and many of us benefited from her wisdom and counsel. We and Cincinnati Children’s are better for having had her in our lives.
