Dr. Kathy Emery Retires After 34 Years at Cincinnati Children’s

“After a lot of careful thought, now is the time.” That is what Dr. Brian Coley said, during his speech for Dr. Kathy Emery’s retirement event. December 15, 2023, was Dr. Kathy Emery’s last day at Cincinnati Children’s Radiology as a full time radiologist. Doctor Emery has been working in our department for 34 years, which is long enough to have been one of our current radiologist-in-chief’s (Dr. Coley) fellowship position interviewers.

After Arizona State, Dr. Emery went to Chicago for various medical training, then went to Michigan for her pediatric fellowship. In 1989, she came to Cincinnati Children’s and never left.

Cincinnati Children’s Radiology, one of 13 large departments in the nation when she arrived, has seen several changes over her tenure. She’s held many leadership positions and been a great educator. Dr. Emery was no stranger to research, but it’s education that she really loves.

She’s worked a lot with the technologists over the years as well in quality improvement projects. When MRI was still in its infancy for pediatric musculoskeletal division, she did a lot of the early work to develop protocols with the Society for Pediatric Radiology and other organizations.

In her off time, she spends time with her pet dogs and grandkids and is working on her 6th Dan black belt in karate. So, there are lots of other activities that interest Dr. Emery.

We appreciate everything that she has brought to the department and people over the years. She’s been an influencer for a very long time, and we’re going to miss her.
