Meet Shelly Renee Gosney, Radiology MRI Manager

Shelly Renee Gosney, affectionately nicknamed “NAYS” by her father who coined it from “Re-Nay” while spinning her in circles as a little girl, is a proud Kentucky native with deep roots in Alexandria, Kentucky (Campbell County). She now resides in Butler, Kentucky, where she and her husband Jeremy own a home and two rental properties on their farmland. Shelly is deeply grateful for her family, which includes her two sons: Dustin, a pilot who is married to Jenna, and Ayden, a heavy-duty diesel repair technician and operator who has been dating Aliya for four years.

Growing up in her hometown, Shelly cherishes memories of endless outdoor play with friends and neighbors—long before cell phones ever interrupted the fun. That sense of freedom and connection to nature still fuels her today.

Her passion for the medical field was sparked by a love for anatomy classes in high school and college, where she was captivated by the complexity and beauty of the human body. Radiology became her calling, beginning with general X-ray and evolving into specialties like interventional radiology, cardiac cath, and surgery. A pivotal moment came when a supervisor offered her on-the-job training in MRI, and she was instantly hooked—though she admits the physics can be a bit much!

Shelly’s journey to Cincinnati Children’s was a long-awaited dream. Although she hoped to complete her clinicals there during X-ray school, circumstances led her elsewhere. Over the years, she held various roles as both a technologist and administrator, but her desire to work at Children’s never waned. She thrives in the hospital’s dynamic environment, where innovation and continuous learning are part of everyday life.

Currently, Shelly serves as the Radiology MRI manager at the base hospital, overseeing all MRI magnets except those used for research. She also manages the MRI division and the radiology post processors, while another manager handles outpatient centers.

Outside of work, Shelly is energized by meaningful connections with friends and family. Whether traveling, dining out, hosting dinner parties, or gathering around a bonfire, she finds joy in togetherness. Her faith is central to her life, and she strives to live by the principle of loving God and loving others. A true outdoors enthusiast, she delights in gardening, landscaping, kayaking, hiking, camping, biking, and even mowing grass and splitting wood—just keep her outside!

Recently, Shelly rekindled her love for reading through a book club started by her best friend. She’s especially fond of Freida McFadden’s murder mysteries, which always deliver an unexpected twist. On screen, she’s captivated by The Chosen series, praising its brilliant writing and enjoying the added connection of knowing friends who’ve appeared as extras.

Shelly is thrilled to be part of the Cincinnati Children’s team and looks forward to meeting many new faces. Her warmth, enthusiasm, and dedication make her a vibrant presence in the department.
