“Cincinnati?! Like, as in Ohio?!” I remember my mom saying when I told her we were moving to Cincinnati a few years ago. It’s kind of crazy to think that such a great children’s hospital isn’t in New York, Los Angeles, or some other large city… it’s in a seemingly random city in the Midwest. My friends back in Texas still get which Ohio city I live in confused – Cleveland? Columbus? No, Cincinnati!
I made the move north from San Antonio, Texas, because Cincinnati Children’s is one of the best children’s hospitals in the country. I would argue that the radiology department in particular is the best in the country and by far the best place a pediatric radiology fellow can train after 4 years of medical school and 5 years of residency. Everyday I get to work with radiologists who are not only experts in their particular niches within pediatric radiology, but who are also leaders in the field and excellent mentors to a young physician who’s eager to learn everything she can from their vast experience. The radiologists I get to learn from are excited to teach and learn from each other, which creates an infectious environment for acquiring new knowledge and providing the best possible care for our special patients.
As a young married couple, my husband and I came to love Cincinnati as we explored the tons of delicious and fun restaurants as well as its great arts scene and lots of wonderful outdoor spaces. Now we have an almost 2-year-old son and we’re expecting another coming in a few short months. We now love another side of Cincinnati: exploring the zoo, the aquarium, the locally owned bookstore’s story time, and many of the other family-friendly places and events the city has to offer.
What at first seemed like a random Midwest city to move to has now come to be the city we love and the place we call home. I’m so excited to work in such a great place where everyone so obviously loves their jobs and is passionate about trying to help our very special patients in any way possible. With such great people and such a great hospital, it’s easy to see why it’s one of the best in the country!
