Hi, I’m Paula Chen, one of the clinical fellows for 2025-26! I’m originally from Gwangju, South Korea. At the age of eight, I immigrated to Houston, Texas, where I grew up until I went to the University of Michigan for college (Go Blue!). After graduating with a microbiology degree, I worked as a pediatric oncology lab manager in Michigan Medicine for two years and then as a high school biology teacher in Southwest Detroit for one and a half years. While those were valuable experiences, I chose medicine because I wanted to have a direct impact in patients’ health and lives. I graduated from Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine in Rochester, Michigan, and did my preliminary internal medicine intern year at The Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, before completing my diagnostic radiology residency at Indiana University.
I chose Cincinnati Children’s because I got a glimpse of the training, culture, values, and the people in the department back in 2019 when I did an away elective as one of many fourth-year medical students rotating through Cincinnati Children’s Radiology. It was brief because I was in and out for residency interviews, and I had absolutely no idea what was going on while sitting with fellows at the workstation and in radiology conferences, but that experience left an impression. I thought, “I would love to come back if I’m given the opportunity.” Six years later, I am so grateful and excited to be here. It’s surreal—I get to now sit at the workstation and radiology conferences as a fellow!

In my free time, I like to run but then cancel that out with visits to the local Cincinnati bakeries and trying out new restaurants with my husband, who is also a Wolverine (Go Blue!). We do love taking our little dog Winston to the parks in Cincinnati and also on our trips as a personal item under the seat on the airplane (against his will).
